Spring Cleaning for HVAC Series continues with Part 3 this week, and we’re talking about plumbing appliances and fixtures.
The best DIY advice we can give you is to keep it clean! Keeping your plumbing appliances and fixtures clean not only keeps things hygienic and good smelling, but it gives you a perfect opportunity to spot a leak or other problem.
Buildup of dirt and debris on surfaces gets in the way of seals working properly and clogs vents and filters, all leading to the need for repairs or replacement. Keeping the rubber seals on your fridge, dishwasher and clothes washer clean will help them last longer and keep the seals tight. Dust acts like insulation on the coils of your refrigerator, so give them a thorough vacuuming to prevent overheating.
Now is a great time of year to give all your kitchen, bathroom and washer-dryer lint traps, air filters and exhaust vents a good cleaning – this not only keeps your home and occupant protected, but allows your systems to work more efficiently and last longer.
Faucets and shower heads gather silt and sediment over time. Most have heads that can be unscrewed, with a screen that can be cleaned or a head that can be soaked to loosen and remove built up. You may not need to replace that slow running faucet – just clean it!
This is a perfect time to inspect your toilet’s inner components. Remove the tank lid and flush the toilet. Watch the full cycle, making sure the flapper is sealing well and the fill valve stops working at the right water level. That’s Spring Cleaning done right!
