Is Your Indoor Air Quality Making Your Allergies Worse?

While outdoor air quality is a major factor for allergy sufferers, the quality of the air inside can also have a big impact on those with allergies. Most of us spend a large majority of our time indoors – as much as 90% – so if the quality of the air inside where you spend so much time is polluted, your allergies are going to be worse.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency – indoor air can be as much as 100 times more polluted than outside air!

The problem with indoor air is that it is hard to keep fresh and clean because we’re in Maine and must keep things closed up much of the year. Also, many homes and buildings have very poor air circulation. Unless you are intentionally taking steps to circulate and clean the indoor air you are breathing, chances are it’s pretty polluted! Yikes!

Improving Indoor Air Quality

How can you help reduce your allergy problems, no matter the time of year? Take some important steps to improve your indoor air quality:

  • Make sure your home has proper ventilation.
  • Keep your HVAC filters clean. Although many filters say they last 90 days that might not necessarily be true. Change or clean them at least monthly.
  • For people who have acute problems with dust, consider dust mite casings for bedding, and change the bedding once a week.
  • Make sure your plumbing fixtures and sink trap aren’t harboring mold sending toxic spores into the air.
  • Maintain your HVAC systems well with annual cleanings, and make sure you clean your vents and registers regularly.
  • Bathe your pets to cut down on dander (also, pet fur harbors dust mites so another great reasons to keep your pets as clean as possible!).
  • Consider installing an air purification system into your HVAC or purchase an air purifier and put it in the room you use most frequently. Better models filter smaller microns, meaning cleaner air and fewer problems with allergies.

Beyond Filters – Cleaning Indoor Air

HVAC systems (heating and cooling) use filters to remove particles from the air circulating in your house. Some filters are better than others because they can remove smaller particles. However, even high-quality filters cannot trap particles that are smaller than 5 microns in size. That is the size the American Lung Association says will pass through our lungs. Unfortunately, 98% of all indoor air particles are less than 1 micron in size.

Gelinas is committed to helping homeowners and businesses create the best indoor environment for you and your family using air and surface cleaning technology. Our indoor air quality solutions can remove even the smallest particles from the air. These indoor air quality products make a huge difference in the lives of those with respiratory problems and illnesses such as allergies, asthma, COPD, and other health problems.

Our systems don’t just purify – they KILL microorganisms, bacteria and viruses, that cause illnesses and are harmful to our health.

Our technology goes beyond air purification – these units actually eliminate harmful contaminants in the air and on surfaces:
